After a break yesterday, today it was back to the gym to pound out 4-miles on the treadmill. How hard can that be? Well, some days are good running days and some days are bad, today was bad. My body didn’t feel right and I never fell into a rhythm but nevertheless, I had 4-miles to run. So what is a person to do?
Listening to the iPod while mindlessly scanning the TV bank got me through miles 1-3, but mile 4 was a little iffy. I finally resorted to a trick I use to climb mountains, counting steps. This practice takes my mind off the difficulty of the task at hand and focused on steps and numbers. I have also been known to utilize another method of distraction, singing. But not at the gym, just ask anyone who knows me,I can’t carry a tune! Mile 4 complete, number of steps…a lot.
And do I have a sign on my back, “Use the treadmill beside me if you intend to use your cell” ? The gym is still crowded with New Year’s resolutioners but there were several treadmills open today. Some girl climbed on the machine next to me, turned up the speed and proceeded to make a phone call. Sheesh, don’t know if I was more irritated by the phone call or the fact that she could run so fast and still carry on a phone conversation.
