One of my New Year’s resolutions (I am not telling all of them) is to get out on the trail several times a month. On this rainy, sunny, cloudy, warm, cool day, we asked Lee to pick a trail. His choice?! The Chimney’s, a 4.0-mile round trip hike with a 1,700 foot elevation gain for the 2.0-mile climb. Yikes! Short but painful. We topped off the hike in Gatlinburg devouring veggie soup and cornbread at the Brass Lantern. At least John and I had veggie soup while we watched Lee make a burger, fries and salad disappear. Hummm…youth.

Chimney Tops from the trail.

John and Lee with Carol’s peanut brittle. Carol is the best peanut brittle maker ever. She made batch after batch during the holidays; the guys polished off tin after tin. I was not surprised to discover John had a little ziplock bag of peanut brittle safety stashed in his day pack, ready to enjoy at the summit of the Chimneys. Yum, yum. Lee has turned into to a real peanut brittle connoisseur himself.

View from the Chimney’s. The clouds hung low in the mountains and we hiked in and out of rain sprinkles. The sun came out for a short time at the summit and warmed us but it didn’t last.
